Campo Arqueológico de Tavira

The Campo Arqueológico de Tavira is a non-profit association, devoted to the study and dissemination of the history, archaeology and ancient geography of Tavira (Portugal; ancient Balsa, BAtlas 26 C4), its region and the Iberian Southwest.

CAT's informal core research group is composed of two archaeologists, a philologist, an arabic historian and a geographer with gis experience:

  • Maria Garcia Pereira Maia (archaeologist/historian, President of CAT and excavations director)
  • Manuel Andrade Maia (Senior archaeologist, Instituto Português de Arqueologia, Lisbon)
  • Prof. Maria Alice Fernandes (philologist, Roman and Mozarabic studies, Univ. Algarve, Faro)
  • Prof. Abdallah Kawli (historian, Arab and Islamic al-Andalus studies, Univ. Algarve, Faro)
  • Luís Fraga da Silva (geographer/system analyst, historical geography studies, CAT)
